Biographical Info

Doug Doty started out his college career first wanting to be a nuclear physicist, later a piano player and later still maybe even a minister. That was until he took his first bookkeeping class in college. On the third day of Bookkeeping 101 he knew he had found “it” – right there and then, Doug began to pursue a career in accounting and has been passionate about it ever since.

Doug was born and raised in Idaho where his father worked in construction and his mother worked for the Idaho State School System. As soon as he could, Doug began working – first on a paper route and then on a farm for family friends. He began to understand how the agricultural and construction industries worked – knowledge that would serve him well later.

Doug attended Western Baptist Bible College (now Corban University) and later Portland State University. He entered the field of public accounting in 1972. He worked with a large accounting firm for almost 10 years and gained valuable experience. Doug found he had a knack for counseling clients on tax strategies and teaching them to understand their own financial challenges and opportunities. Feeling he could offer clients more time and attention in his own firm, he started Douglas W. Doty, CPA, PC, with a staff consisting of one bookkeeper and himself, at an office on Market Street in Salem, Oregon. In 1999 the company moved to 1515 Liberty Street SE. In December 2014, Doty Pruett Wilson moved to it’s new home at 447 State Street in downtown Salem.

Since opening his business, Doug has established himself as a dynamic member of the community, and is respected both locally and statewide for his knowledge of how to apply appropriate tax strategies and corporate structures to companies. The firm has a belief that CPA’s should know their clients; if you just drop off your taxes once a year you are not getting the most from your relationship and the expertise your accountant can provide. He believes in a proactive approach to accounting. Doty & Company works with every type of client from start-up companies to businesses who need help with the challenges presented by the recession and even some who come to him trying to cope with serious problems like bankruptcy or embezzlement. He has found that understanding a client’s situation and stepping in to help in times of need is what sets his firm apart.

The firm uses proprietary tools, first developed by Doug and fine-tuned over 30 years, to review each client’s financial situation and to analyze the best model for their financial future. The majority of accountants are not doing tax planning. Clients need to understand their financial situations and determine ways to get the most benefits out of the tax system we have. “I want clients to be more successful because they use our firm,” he said.

Living a life that is true to one’s faith and highest ideals is important to Doug and his family. Doug has four children and five grandchildren that are the light of his life. He and his wife Gayle Caldarazzo-Doty enjoy travelling, especially to see family and friends, and plan to travel to Europe as often as they can. Doug has a special interest in history, especially the U.S. Revolutionary War. Doug and Gayle both love fly-fishing as well. Not surprisingly, based on his early college major, he still “tickles the ivories,” occasionally playing piano at church or at his Rotary Club. And, while not a minister, Doug is a popular speaker on a variety of professional topics around the community.

After graduation from college, Tyson got married and started a family.  He and his wife now have five children including twin boys (numbers 4 & 5).  They are active in their local church where they help teach Sunday school, lead small groups, and have ministered on the Navajo Nation in Arizona during each of the last 4 years.

“Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury. There is not even a patriotic duty to increase one’s taxes. Over and over again the Courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everyone does it, rich and poor alike and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands.” – Judge Learned Hand

I was born in California but spent most of my life growing up in Salem, OR and I loved living in the northwest. I grew up being very involved in sports and church. In high school is where I really found my interest in business. I was involved in DECA for three of my four years along with being on the basketball and golf teams. I went to Corban University to play golf and get my business degree and ended up adding accounting for a double major my junior year. The summer after I graduated I married my wonderful husband, Jared Rust, whose passion is soccer, although we met on the golf team at Corban. He is the Director of Coaching at CFC and is the Head Associate Coach at Willamette University. I have also coached basketball the past five years and was a small group leader for a group of middle school girls prior to coaching. I have loved being able to invest in girls at the high school age, which was something that was a big deal for me when I was their age. Now, my husband and I love spending time outside, whether that be playing golf, watching soccer, being at the dog park with our dogs, Sadie and Zizou, camping, or anything that involves coffee or a good glass of wine. We also like being with our friends having fun and relaxing.
